NYT Changes Policy to Publish Gay, Lesbian Unions
Monday, Aug. 19, 2002
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The New York Times, one of the most respected
newspapers in the United States, said on Sunday it was changing its policy
to publish formal gay and lesbian unions, joining scores of other dailies.
Editor Howell Raines said in Sunday's editions the change to
"Weddings/Celebrations" from "Weddings" in the long-running Sunday Styles
section will begin next month.
Gay and lesbian activists hailed the move. "We are delighted that The New
York Times has changed its policy because it is in many ways the preeminent
newspaper in this country," said spokesman John Sonego of the Gay & Lesbian
Alliance Against Defamation.
"We are really hoping that their change in policy will lead to other
newspapers across the country treating gay and lesbian unions in a more fair
and accurate way."
