2002 Women in the Muslim World: Diversity in Culture and Politics
March 5
12:30 - 2:00 pm
Institute for Policy Studies, 733 15th St, NW #1020
Washington, DC
Muslim Women in the Middle and Near East:

In the wake of 9-11, the media has attempted to explain to the American public the complexity of our ties to the Middle East and the Muslim world. This has led to a continued lack of understanding of the diversity that exists throughout the region and the particular historical realities that have engendered it.

In this panel our speakers will focus on the social, political, and cultural diversity of countries across the Middle and Near East-- as varied as Iran, Lebanon, and Syria-- and how such diversity affects the different roles of Muslim women.
We are joined by Nadya Sbaiti of Georgetown University, and an expert on women of the Levant; Behjat Dehghan, President of the Association of Iranian Women, and others who will discuss how this diversity has been lost on the American press in favor of a more monolithic, yet less accurate, portrayal of Muslim women in the Middle East, South and Central Asia, and beyond.

2002 PEACEFUL CONFLICT TRANSFORMATION
The Transcend approach
March 9 - 10
Nova Southeastern University
Plantation FL
This workshop will provide participants with an introduction to the Transcend method of conflict transformation by peaceful means, based on 40 years of research and practice. Conflicts can rarely be "resolved" in the sense that they completely disappear, but they can be transformed from being fought with violent means to being conducted by peaceful means. In that sense, conflicts can have a constructive function in helping bring about desirable change. The workshop format will be highly interactive, with a combination of lectures, facilitated discussions and exercises in small groups. Participants are invited to contribute case studies from their own experience.
COST: $200; Student Rate $75 (Student I.D. Required)

2002 Zero Population Growth's 6th Annual Capitol Hill Days
March 9 - 12
Wyndham City Center Hotel, 1143 New Hampshire Avenue, NW
Washington, DC
Join ZPG and other population organizations . Capitol Hill Days is a once-a-year opportunity for population activists to meet with their members of Congress, to learn about the latest developments in the population field, exchange ideas and network.

Highlights from this year’s event include:

* Speakers explaining the ins and outs of U.S. aid for international population assistance
* Workshops on lobbying skills and effective grassroots action
* Capitol Hill lobbying visits and a reception
* ZPG sponsored concert
* Student Activist Workshops

Fight the Global Gag Rule: This policy denies U.S. population assistance funding to organizations that provide legal abortion services or participate in public debates about abortion using their own, non-U.S. funds.

Preserve UNFPA Funding: The United Nations Population Fund is the largest internationally funded provider of family planning and reproductive health services around the world. Every year, family planning opponents try to reduce or eliminate U.S. funding to this vital organization that helps millions of women worldwide gain access to reproductive health and family planning services.

And finally… Make Your Opinion Count! Members of Congress like to hear from their constituents – by coming to Washington DC, your lobbying efforts will make an even bigger impact!
